Synopsis

Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s critically acclaimed film is based on The Borrowers, a 1952 children’s fantasy novel by Mary Norton. Originally titled as The Borrower Arrietty, the film turned into Japan’s biggest blockbuster of 2010. As we stream in, we discover the factors that led to the film conquering theatres worldwide with a gross turnover of US$126 million and it being awarded as the Best Animated Japanese film at the 34th Japan Academy Awards.

The film opens with focus on The Borrowers – a community of tiny (under-grown) people in Japan, who live a hidden life under the floorboard of usual Japanese households. Arrietty is a member of this community, who resides beneath the floorboard of a house shared by Sadako, a mature female with her sick nephew Sho. The clock family is part of the Borrower community and Arrietty is a girl belonging to this very family. Arrietty befriends Sho, only to discover that he is stricken with a fatal heart-disease for the rest of his life. Their friendship causes Haru, the maid of that household suspicious of something going on beneath the floorboards.

When Haru discovers the clock family’s residence under their floorboards, Arrietty’s family is endangered as they are compelled to vacate the premises and their beloved residence, then and there. The discovery of a girl as one of the four-inch tall members of the clock family brings disaster into their life that now tumbles in the hands of Sadako, her maid and Sho. As we watch The Secret World of Arrietty online, we find the pure bond of friendship spell trouble for two innocent friends and their families.
