Synopsis

The Princess of Montpensier is a romantic drama, coming straight from 16th century France. The movie is an adaptation of a short story by Madame de La Fayette. The story follows a beautiful lady, from an aristocratic family, Marie, who falls in love with her rakish cousin, Henri de Guise.

Her father, however, refuses to accept their love, as he had already promised to marry his daughter to Phillipe, the prince of Montpensier. Although Marie retaliates at first, to the extent that she even agrees to go to a convent than to marry the unknown prince; yet, it is the will of her father that prevails in the end. Marie marries Phillipe, who is sent off to war shortly after the wedding. In his absence, she is under the care of an aged count, named Chabannes. Count Chabannes is a wise man who does not favor warfare. He has a secret forbidden attraction to the young Marie, which he never expresses. Despite his love for her, it is his duty to constantly be on her guard and protect her from the filthy politics of the court.
