Sammy is a sea turtle, who hatches on an isolated beach and is caught by a seagull. He then strives to save his life and manages to escape, when the seagull clashes with another seagull.
The other seagull also happens to carry its prey, which is a female sea turtle, Shelly. Due to the clash of the seagulls, Sammy falls into a raft, that is heading towards the ocean. In the ocean, he comes across another hatchling, Ray, who tells him about a 'Turtle Paradise' on an island called 'Lapagos'. When Sammy is released into the sea, he realizes that he has lost Ray. His adventures finally take him to the waters of California, where he is caught by a hippie woman. He then starts living in that woman's house, with another female sea turtle called Vera, and a pet cat called Catoff. On a Christmas evening, the hippie community draws a peace symbol on Sammy and claims him to be a brand ambassador. Later, the police evict the hippie community and Sammy and Vera are released in the ocean. There they save another sea turtle, who is attacked by the sharks.
